Desperation is considered a combination of devotion and obsession and isn't a fond emotion to those being "doted" upon or worshipped. Being desperate is similarly doting upon someone, fictional or real-life, and willing to do anything to get affection from said person. However desperate does not only apply to a singular obsession, it can accommodate multiple obsessions over any period of time and any set of mind.

When most people view the thought of this emotion, they think of the crazy stalkers that build shrines in their closets and creep out their idolized crush; contrary to the majority, desperation is not always narrowed to a single person, more commonly it is a longing for attention that one couldn't achieve earlier in life morphed into the sensations of loneliness and emptiness.

These sensations are undesirable seeing as human beings are social creatures, and so one would try to "fill the void" once s/he fell in love with someone--despite if the love is true or not--and thus creating desperation

Desperation Overview:

Desperation is a sensation that involves the following and maybe more:

  • longing

  • yearning

  • openness or being "overly willing"

  • desire to feel wanted

    • usually to fill a void or replace something lost in the past, whether it be attention or another object.

The obsession and desire leading to it are common but in the black and white manga picture depicted, desperation can also come from what looks like stupidity, strangeness, or just being "flat out weird" to the audience, or envrionment.

Further into the Emotion:

These butlers are Ciel and Sebastian from the manga Kiroshitsuji (aka Black Butler). They are demonstrating strange behavior that is linked to a person or particular event, which is another way to describe desperation.

When men attempt bold gestures, generally it's considered romantic. When women do it, it's often considered desperate or psycho.

We celebrities are desperate pigs.

Penn Jillette

Desperate? That can be a justification for all kinds of behavior.

Jessica Walter
